Deb is in "the chair" getting iv's right now. We just the labs back from this morning and she is
Critically low on platelets...second
D day in a row.So, after her current iv's are Done, it will be blood platelet time. Yesterday we did not get pre
- meds before taking platelets and Deb was miserable all night.Today we will get the pre- meds.
Our formerly faithful electronic thermometer failed last night. We got erratic readings last night. So today the nurse found us an antique glass and mercury filled thermometer. She was appalled when I told her that as kids we would hold mercury in our hands and play with it. Whippersnappers!
Did you ever handle mercury (besides in your tuna fish sandwich or amalgam tooth fillings?)
Deb Is having chills so I 've bundled her up in warm blankets from the warmer. Hope she does better.
Blessings all
Vern

Wow, your question brings back some old memories. Fortunately, the EPA wasn't created until 1970 so I'm sure there weren't any dangers associated with the mercury, lead, etc. we used as toys. Seems like I remember spending half a day trying to recover spilled mercury from an elementary school classroom. I had an aspirin bottle full at the start of the day and only about a half bottle after all the work. There are many other stories of chemical exposure ... melting lead for the plumbers for a nickel an hour, as well as cutting asbestos siding for a quarter an hour... all before I was a teenager. We were lucky! Do you remember the "rockets" we fabricated with tinfoil, pipe and match heads? Now those pipe bombs are WMD.
ReplyDeleteOf course we did! And we sucked helium from balloons in 6th grade science and I had a watch with a radium dial on the face. We stood on the tops of high playground slides without falling and we jumped off of see saws when our friend was still up in the air. Weren't the 50's and 60's fun! Mary Roberts
ReplyDeleteMy grandfather had a container of mercury in his tool shed. Not sure what it was for - he was a collector of all sorts of things.... My grandmother just cheerfully sighed when he would drive up with a truck load of something or other he had bought at a "sale".... Anyway ..... my cousin and I would pour the mercury into our hands - let it slide from hand to hand - It would sometimes leave a dark residue on our hands!! Don't know how we survived.... we would also ride from Ga. to Fla. in a car with no air conditioning and no seat belts!!! horrors!!! Cindy
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to stop in for a little hello and let you know how much you're in my thoughts and prayers. Love you!!!! gLou
ReplyDeleteWe would take a dime, worth 10 cents back then, and rub the mercury on it to make it look brand new.
ReplyDeleteMaybe the mercury is why I am sort of strange now. Of course this was about 65 years ago.
My prayers for you and vern.
Paul
Oh my goodness, that memory was embedded so deep I may never have recalled it! Yes, I used to play with mercury. I remember trying to get it all into one little ball, like pinning jello to a tree!! I don't recall where I got the mercury or why. Thanks for the flashback ;-)
ReplyDeleteThoughts and prayers with you everyday.
Mickey
One of my favorite activities was getting a blob of mercury through a maze. Then you shook the maze, and the mercury would break up into little pieces. Those were the days!
ReplyDeleteHope Deb is feeling better today. You'll be home soon!
Just a quick note about our weekend. I stayed in the newborns at church. We(Dina Nelson & I) had 4 boys and they all wanted something at the same time. We stayed very busy, but really enjoyed it. Sunday night, Alex took me to see Phantom of the Opera at the Fox for our 35th anniversary. We had never seen it and it was amazing. The rest of the week, we just go to work, go home, have dinner and get ready for the next day. But grateful we are able to still do all that. I am having knee issues & may need a partial or full knee replacement, so I go to water aerobics three times a week which is fun & a lot of work. You are in our prayers and thoughts constantly. Love you guys.
