There is a small gift shop in the lobby of the cancer center. Deb always enjoys a quick spin thru it to see what's new. Here are a few shots.

Today we met UAMS staff photographers/writers who were doing a photo shoot of Deb and me for some articles. Since it was about this blog and its impact on others, it was only fitting that we include them!

We had fun with pros setting up equipment right there in the waiting area of the infusion center.

Class reunion and test day

This huge stone wall in the foyer of the cancer center is typical Arkansas stone used for homes, walls, and other structures around central Arkansas. Deb and I love it's look! When we see it, we think Arkansas!

Today was Deb's big test day. She started at 07:30 and ended about 5:30pm. Her bone marrow test was especially painful for her today. That pain set the tone for the rest of her day. As a reward,we had planned to go out to her favorite restaurant tonight. By the time the day was over she only wanted to go back to the room. I ran out and got a takeout meal for her.

Classmates Don and Anita are upstairs in our old room. Don is at his low point. I volunteered to bring them supper also but someone beat me to it. We are like family out here!

As I was walking thru the waiting area of the infusion center, a gray-haired lady that looked familiar called out to me. I went over to her and she asked about Deb and me. I still couldn't recognize her until she told me she was Carol from Kentucky. The last time I saw Carol, she was wearing a doo-rag on her bald head and going home to check on her heirloom tomatoes. This wavy beautiful hair couldn't be Carol, could it? It was! She said her hair had always been straight but it had come back in with a big curly wave and absolutely beautiful!

Carol had been in remission for about six months and had been coming for quarterly checkups. She had been clean until recently when her myeloma came back suddenly and worse than originally diagnosed. She is considering a special treatment that has been designed for such situations-called 'Killer-Cell' therapy. She was so happy to talk to me and get an update on Deb.

We needed a pain killer refill and Carla the pharmacist here worked hard to get it approved by the insurance company. Her oldest and now middle sons have earned Eagle Scout. Congrats!

Of course, you can't get powerful painkillers without a prescription which Dr Nair's nurse Gina got signed for us. Gina is the person with the HS tattoo on her wrist I pictured last year. Thanks Gina!

Catching the Markham house van mid-day, staff member Julie came walking up with her rescued greyhound. All the staff and other classmates came out to meet the dog. Julie used to be a Delta Flight Attendant.

Deb was in the MRI from 2:30 until after 5 pm. It was so hard for her to remain still while lying on her bone-marrow site. But, with her usual great attitude, she endured!

Back home Deb has not spent much time in the kitchen but wanted to bake her world famous cookies as gifts for the hotel and infusion staff here. So, she did! Today we passed them out. Yummy!

Deb is crashing tonight. We see Dr Nair Thursday to get test results and find out our next steps.

Our classmate Harold lost his wife Gwen back around Christmas. Today we exchanged texts. He is lonely but doing OK.

Safely back in Little Rock

We left Georgia about 11 am and bucked a 42 knot headwind. It took 2:45 to get here. Deb was able to get into Gracie almost unaided. What a change since last April when it took about 8 of us to ease her into Gracie! Seven fractured vertabrae will do that to you!

Several friends saw us off from the airport and when we landed at North Little Rock Airport we were greeted by the lineman and other staff we have grown to know here. After gassing up Gracie and retrieving our rental car, we stopped off for a late lunch, then on to the Markham House. Deb had mail waiting on her! Thanks friends! The staff here was all amazed at how well Deb is doing.

We went to a local grocery and picked up supper and snacks for the week. Deb is in good spirits and we are retiring early tonight to be rested for the full day of tests tomorrow.

Preparing to return to Arkansas

Today was a busy day physically and emotionally as we head back to UAMS in the morning for a week of tests and meeting with Dr. Nair. Deb and I are optimistic about the tests, but we are prepared for whatever surprises await us.

This afternoon we Skyped with Trey, Katka, and Evelyn. Here she is in her garden.

 We had to drop the dog (Oscar) at Amanda's for safe keeping, then dropped in on Vern's parents in Morrow. The home to laundry being done, clothing assembled, meds counted out , mail dealt with, Gracie fueled, weather checked.

St Patrick's Day supper

Last evening we had perfect weather. Deb had rested all day so she could go with me to the Falcon RV Squadron St Patrick's day supper at a local restaurant. She enjoyed the supper and good company.

Birthday celebration continues

Son Stephen came down from Atlanta to cook supper for Deb. He cooked pork chops, fresh baked beets, and a cabbage caboso. For dessert he gave Deb a gourmet cake slice. Handily, Vern enjoyed the same menu even though it's not my birthday.

We continue to celebrate Deb's company.

Birthday events

Deb has had a quiet day at home in the sun room. Friends Cathy and Ginny started Deb's day out with an early morning breakfast visit. Deb got her desired b-day gift of a digital caliper for her jewelry making hobby from Vern.

For supper, Vern cooked her a tender steak and potato. Deb said it was good. Oscar cleaned up the scraps.

After supper, friends Frank and Gayle came by for a visit. Oscar and Frank enjoyed tussling over a toy fox.

Saturday baby sitting

We stayed overnight with Jon and Amanda and kept watch on Eliana while parents enjoyed an evening together. This morning Eliana was a delightfully happy baby as she awakened in our company. Jon and Vern did a few honey-do's including installing a child gate on the second floor landing because she will be crawling and walking soon. Deb and Amanda enjoyed mommie duties together. Deb was so happy to be able to be with Eliana. She wishes there was some way to be with Evelyn also. Maybe someday!

This afternoon after our customary nap, Deb had a few herbs she wanted to pot, so we spent a few minutes re-potting. Deb is so in love with flowers and plants,she talks to them!

Deb's birthday is Tuesday and she's grateful to be here for another one.

This is a no-chemo week and we are preparing to head to Arkansas next week for evaluation and testing.It will be busy!

Pray for good weather so we will have a timely and uneventful flight in Gracie.

Bath time for Eliana

TV Commercial results: _

Tears! There is a commercial on TV that a cancer group uses to say that they are working hard to give people more birthdays. When Deb saw it and realized that God was about to give her another birthday, she teared up! ( 'Beware the ides of March')

We've come a long ways in the last twelve months. A year ago we were deep in discovery about  this myeloma thing. We were facing the possibility of treatment in Arkansas. Looking back on the blessings we have been showered with the past twelve months is an overwhelming demonstration of God's provision and the love and kindness of each of you. Thanks!

If  Deb is up to it I plan on a leisurely drive to Calloway Gardens this Saturday. We have celebrated many events there. It's a favorite spot for us.

Yesterday two angel friends visited and practiced some craft skills with Deb.

Deb said that four deer napped in the back yard during the day as she napped in the sunroom. She enjoys watching them. It makes me feel good that critters are healthy and feel safe in our yard. Perhaps we will be also.

Today is chemo day. We are beginning to think about our next trip to Arkansas the 20th of the month or so based on weather.

Eliana-baby dedication service

Today Eliana was dedicated to the Lord. The pastor blessed Eliana with the same prayer I have prayed over my own children so many times: He asked the Lord to cause Eliana to love and serve Jesus all the days of her life.

Eliana's other grandparents David and Linda flew in from Florida. Stephen also joined us. After the service, we all went to lunch at our favorite Mexican  food restaurant in Atlanta.

The dress Eliana wore today is one that Deb smocked about thirty years ago for Amanda. It looked as good today as it did when it was new.

Deb made a tiny bracelet for Eliana. She knotted it between each pearl so Eliana can't break it and loose the pearls.

How about Deb's hair! Growing back thick but note as dark as it was before.

Tuesday-another chemo day

Yesterday angel Ema drove 'Ms. Daisy'. Deb has complied a list of Tuesday driver angels for chemo Tuesdays.Thanks all!

Because of the cumulative affects of chemo, Deb was taken off one med a week early. It had dropped her blood pressure downward to the limit and had other affects. That's the benefit of weekly labs.

Oscar the dog is fitting in better and better. Deb now is well protected by 5 pounds of hair. Speaking of hair, Sunday night she asked me to to give her a trim. So, out came the clippers. Anyone else need a trim?

Saturday

Deb rested in the morning after some friend angels brought and shared a delicious supper with us last night. Vern spent some relaxing hours this morning at the hangar catching up on some maintenance on Redbird. Mid morning Amanda and Eliana surprised Vern at the hangar where Eliana got to play with Redbird and then come visit Deb. Later, Vern brought in Amanda's favorite pizza and played with Eliana while Amanda ran to the grocery. It was a great and productive day! A long phone conversation with my uncle Alton topped it off! He cleaned fish from 8:30 am until 3:30 yesterday afternoon! Wonder how his hands smell today?

We have our room reservations in Little Rock and our hospital test schedule. The test week starts March 20th. Until then, friend angels have signed up to drive Deb to our local hospital for her weekly chemo. Deb has a mild case of cabin fever since she can't drive and would like to do more short local trips. and Vern is working.

Yesterday Vern met an Emergency Room Doctor who just left Little Rock for a new job in Birmingham. The doc knew all Deb's docs and spoke most favorably about his days at UAMS.

Past Week

"Your numbers are all great and except for the myeloma, you are in great health" were the words the PA gave us this week.  Of course, we were greatly comforted and shared a guffaw with her as those words settled in !  Sort  of like the joke, 'Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?'

Certainly, we are delighted with Deb's continued improvement.

Her beautiful hair is about 3/4" long now and is coming in straight and very dark but not as dark as it was. We take great delight in stroking it: it is so soft.  She has used shampoo several times lately.

Last Saturday our friend Mary Roberts from Jacksonville, FL visited us. Mary was part of the Dr and Mrs Owens gang from the 70's. I took Deb down to Macon in Gracie for a short visit with her mother who lives in a nursing home in Warner Robins. Most small airports have a gas-only clunker one can borrow once you fly in for short trips. No way Deb could have held up for the automobile drive, but 200 is much faster than 55! Amen?

Oscar the dog remains with us. We negotiated a treaty and he no longer barks all night. He sleeps outside our bedroom until I get up to prepare for work. At that time I lift him onto a blanket on Deb's bed and the two of them sleep in until about 10-11am.

Today we received a draft article that will be appearing in a magazine soon. It is about the blessings and value of communications during a sickness. We so appreciate the opportunity to encourage and inform each of you and thank you for being a part of our blog community. Once it it is finalized we will try to post it for you.

Saturday update

Deb continues to gain strength and mental sharpness. She catches me on more and more goofs! The old Deb is coming back. Her beautiful hair is now approaching 3/4" long and she asked me to trim some of the shaggies.

Our new family member (Oscar the dog) had his first barkless night and Vern had his first full night of sleep since he came.There is hope! One of us was heading to the basement otherwise!

Deb has been very tired since the chemo really kicked in and the two/week physical therapy workouts started. Something new happened this morning: She awakened me and asked to go out for breakfast: she was starving!  Normally, she grazes mid-morning and I'm the early morning breakfast eater.  Appetite is good??  We saw several church friends while at IHOP.

A Texas friend told me about a new Texas-style BBQ joint here in Ptc, so after work last night, I invited Deb to try it instead of my leftovers and she jumped at the chance!  It was good to get some real brisket-done-Texas style and Deb had a huge 'tater with BBQ inside like we used to have at Strack family farm restaurant in Spring,Tx.

While based at Randolph AFB in the early 70's I used to drive out to a tiny country BBQ joint at the town of Schertz, Texas.  Sooo good!!

For those who have not moved around much, BBQ is different everywhere. Each community thinks theirs is best, of course. How do you like your BBQ?

This afternoon we headed up to Amanda and Jon's to enjoy supper and a visit. Deb was very tired so we had to cut it a little short. Amanda realized that Deb is very lonely being mostly house-bound with very few visitors and unable to drive. She decided to allow us a trial adoption of her pooch, Oscar. Move over, lonely one!

Friday evening

Deb 's poor hearing was further damaged by all the chemo she has had. We were blessed to have a new technology hearing aid system recently become available (at a high price). They have helped Deb's hearing and interaction with others. 

We have been concerned that the chemo may have further damaged her vision as well. Today she had an appointment with an eye doc who tested her and found no significant vision changes. New glasses not required! Hurrah!

Evelyn is having a warm day in Brussels. She and Nadia the Akita dog are basking in sunlight.

Tuesday-chemo day

Deb had good lab results and completed the second 28 day cycle of chemo. Next Tuesday begins another 28 day cycle of a different chemo, then a week off and a visit to Little Rock, if the snow has melted by then !

After feeding a starving lady, we began catching up with some classmates from Arkansas. Out there we had a sense of community that is missing here at our local hospital chemo facility. In Arkansas, we were a community fighting a common enemy-multiple myeloma. We were having common and shared treatments and for much longer times as well as daily togetherness.  Here, the chemo time is much shorter, only once per week, and we haven't formed any friendships yet. Each week the people are different. So, we called some Little Rock classmates and our nurse Mel-Bell so we could check on our buds. All had good reports for which we were grateful. Its encouraging to hear of so many doing well in their recoveries.

Deb asked Dr York if he thought she would really need the three years of local chemo she is scheduled for. He said that Arkansas is noted for its aggressive treatment and that he had never heard of such an extended maintenance program, but that our doctor in Arkansas would make that call.

This morning Deb is not feeling so hot and headed back to bed. She is scheduled for physical therapy   but wants me to try and reschedule it.

Sunday-Shampoo day!

Deb's hair has begun to grow back and is about 3/8" -1/2" long. Today she used shampoo for the first time since last spring! Good to have it back!

We rested today so Deb could attend a super bowl party up to the halftime. It was good to get out.

This week has physical therapy on Monday, chemo Tuesday, and an eye exam on Friday. Deb needs a ride Friday morning because Vern has a dental procedure at the same time. Anyone?

Chemo is the last of the worst chemo and next week begins a new 28  day cycle of another chemo. About March 20 we return to Little Rock for testing to see if the cancer is still in remission.

Thursday-Physical Therapy Approved

Deb is slowly regaining strength and was approved for physical therapy at home. Today she was evaluated by the physical therapist and treatment starts next Monday and Weds. for at least four weeks. Deb is looking forward to gaining endurance and strength.

After a comprehensive medical and pharmacy eval and survey, the therapist whistled and told Deb that in seeing her in her healing process, he has witnessed a walking miracle and that Deb should thank God for her health. Deb quickly agreed!

Deb and I are in awe of how bad off she was just a few months ago and how well she is doing now. It's a God thing!

Tuesday-chemo day

Yesterday morning Deb was very tired. Mid afternoon she said it was if a switch was flipped and she started feeling good. This afternoon she had chemo. So far, so good! PTL!

Field Trip for Deb & Angels + UPDATE

It was a beautiful day, Deb felt good, so off we went in Gracie to fly to a seafood dinner at Hilton Head, SC. Afterward, we returned to Peachtree City via a Georgia coastal tour so Deb, Jeff and Cassy Sims could see all the beautiful Golden Isles. Deb was tired, but so grateful for sunshine and the comfy seats in Gracie. She was so glad to go somewhere besides Arkansas in the faithful plane.

MONDAY UPDATE:
At lunch Monday, Deb said the pictures made her look like she had an easy day but if you could see her today you would see her in bed all day hurting. Guess we overdid it even though she sat most of the day and did very little walking.

Saturday trip out

Deb slept late and then moved into the sun room. Late afternoon the cabin fever finally got the best of her and she wanted to take a short drive. We have a new Sam's Club that just opened a few miles away. We decided to drive over and checkout the crowd. Just in front of us, a car backed out of a spot as a family with a store provided electric cart arrived. So, Deb said 'let's try it!'
So, into the cart and store we went. Deb really enjoyed being out of the house and doing a bit of shopping. Driving the cart around the crowded store was challenging. Nobody was hurt, we are glad to report.

The short trip was just what she needed! Then home to the sun room and a bit of Vern's cooking.

Weds evening-ends a long hard day

Deb had a very hard day. She slept most of the day with bad stomach cramps, etc. She was so dehydrated her blood pressure was low and she was faint. I got her up at 10 pm tonight and she laid on the sun room couch while I fed her broth and dry toast. At 11pm I helped her back to bed. She was still faint and disoriented.

We have the hope of tomorrow.

Tuesday evening/ Weds am :(

Looks like we under-estimated the weekly chemo. To date, it has been mild in our local hospital. It lulled us to not be prepared for what chemo can do to one.  Last night it kicked in with all it's awful affects. Sleep was elusive, and Deb is miserable this morning. She's cold and hot at the same time. Nausea and diarrhea, etc. Hopefully it will pass quickly.

Sunday ride

Deb had hoped to go to church today but was so tired she slept until 11:00am. After she had a bite to eat she asked to go for a long ride, perhaps to Warner Robins to see her mother. By the time she bathed and dressed she said perhaps a medium length ride. When we got in the car, she said was good for a short ride only. I asked where she wanted to go and she said "Tractor Supply." Was I shocked!  "Why there," I asked? Her answer ? "To look at birdhouses!"

What? Well she wanted to look at birdhouses so we could put some up outside the sun room so she could watch the birds. We ended up buying a feeder to hang in a tree and a supply of bird seed.

Leaving there she wanted to go by Pike Nursery to look at plants. She found a few of her favs on sale. She is a plant lover and talks talks to them as she tenderly encourages them to grow.

Friday evening

Weds evening Deb was able to attend our small group meeting in Peachtree City. She was very tired after an hour, but at least she was present for a while and able to be with our friends. Thursday was mostly resting. Friday noon'ish was a trip to the hearing doctor. The chemo killed off most of what remained of Deb's hearing. However, there is a new technology hearing aid just out that will do the job. The new hearing aids are very high-tech and need fine-tuning adjustments. Deb's link in via bluetooth to her cell phone and tv. That allows her to hear without turning the volume super high and ruining everyone else's {Vern's!}.

Hope your days have gone well. It's been a challenge to go from multiple daily posts and high drama to our more sedate lifestyle at home. We are grateful for the 'boredom of rest'! Another word for Peace!

Rough Tuesday

Deb in the local chemo chair. She was very cold and sleepy today.
Today began another 28 day cycle in Deb's chemo. The new cycle has different drugs. It was tough to get Deb up this morning for the 8:30 show time at the hospital. Deb was treated until 12:30, came home, and went to bed in her clothes. When I got home from work after 6 pm, she was still asleep. She got up for a good supper I threw together, then started talking about going back to bed. Our speculation is that all the chemo she has had the last cycle finally kicked in.

Sunday

Deb over did it earlier in the week and could not attend church today although she really wanted to. She was just too tired.

Early afternoon Amanda, Ellie, and Angel Candice came for a short visit.

More Family Christmas Pix-Tired of them yet? UPDATED

Photographer Jon (Amanda's husband) presented us with several DVDs full of treasured family photos. Deb had requested this because we really became aware of the fragility of life and we've seen how quickly loved ones can fade away. You never know when a visit or snapshot will be the last.

Enjoy life today! It is fleeting.

Saturday : progress

Deb made remarkable healing progress this week. Because of the snow and ice her weekly chemo was Thursday instead of Tuesday. We have just completed the first at-home 28 day chemo cycle and next Tuesday switch chemos. Deb has some anxiety as the mega-doses of this bad boy she had in Arkansas were not fun. However, the maintenance levels of chemo she has had have not been the awful doses she endured all last year.

Deb's hair is really coming back. She looks so good! Her mind is clear and there have been several milestones this week.
>Coming home from chemo Thursday, Deb asked me to take her to the grocery store. As she went up and down the aisles she seemed to be at the Smithsonian instead of Publix.
>She attended her first Lady's Bible study.
>She served dessert to some guests.
>She went out to supper at a local restaurant with another couple.
>Her 'decorator and project' brain function kicked in and she's already adding to my honey-do list.
>Her attitude of gratitude is growing and she is so thankful to be here and to be improving.
Is she tired? Yep! She pushed herself hard. She must get  plenty of rest.
It sure is good to have more of her back!

Deb's chemo was canceled due to the ice storm . It has been rescheduled for Thursday afternoon.

Trey, Katka, and Evelyn got caught in the ice storm and ended up at the 'Hartsfield Hotel' for over 50 hours. They got a few blankets and made a pallet and a 'tent' between chairs so they could have some night time privacy.

Praise God for getting them on their way!

Because of the ice, the chemo clinic did not open. Today we must reschedule. Deb is doing great!

Still in the airport! Please Pray!

Trey,Katka,and Evelyn have been at the Atlanta Airport over 24 hours due to the snow/ice storm. Last night they were within a few minutes of takeoff after a lengthy de-icing. The new law charging the airline $30,000 per passenger after 4 hours on the ramp kicked in and the plane taxied back in, let them off for a few minutes, then re-boarded and taxied back out to get back in the de-ice line. When the pilots ran out of on-duty time, the plane taxied back in and they spent the night in the terminal on the floor. Today a new flight to Paris was guaranteed. Now, at 6:30 pm, they have been taken off the plane and told the flight is cancelled and they must re-book and claim their mountain of baggage, go thru customs again, and the airline has no further responsibility.

So, the roads are iced over, they are stuck at the terminal, there are no close-by hotel rooms, and so there...

Pray for clarity of thought and a way to get them the place and rest they need.

Sunday

Deb was not able to do church this morning but Stephen, Trey,Vern, Katka, and Evelyn did! In fact, it was Evelyn's first ever church service. She was well behaved and admired by all who met her!

Trey,Katka, and Evelyn were booked Atlanta-Brussels direct this afternoon but their flight was canceled. Trey was able to get an Atlanta-Paris ticket and we took them to the airport just before the ice and snow began. Katka's father plans on driving to Paris to pick them up. He's visiting from Prague, an additional ten hour drive.

Deb and I were so blessed to have both Evelyn and Eliana here with our three kids and spouses. Deb and I just sat in the sun room and enjoyed the babies. The little cousins are so compatible and fun to be with.

We will miss them!

Happy New Year! A visit from Deb's 'Sister'

Suddenly I realized that no posts had been made since last year! Shame on me!

This afternoon Jackie came to visit Deb. Jackie and Deb are teacher buds who both grew up in Albany,Ga. When they get together, look out! Gattling gums! They are a real hoot together.

Earlier today friend Mary dropped by. Yesterday friend Doris visited and brought lunch. Thanks!

These visits are a real blessing. Deb has been housebound due to weather, weakness, and trying to avoid the numerous bugs floating around out there. Deb has been downright lonely! I suggested she 'schedule' a daily visitor. Obviously she doesn't have the endurance for long visits, but if you want to get on her schedule for about an hour per visit, give her a call or email. I've been taking Deb to Tuesday chemo. Someone who would like to spend more time with her could take her back and forth to Piedmont Fayette on Tuesday mornings.

The sun room is proving to be a good decision as Deb is practically living in the sun room. It is so cheerful and comfy. Come check it out! Thanks, construction angels who made it possible!

If you look closely at Deb's picture above, you may see the fresh crop of hair coming in. Deb looks so good and is glad to leave the wig in wig storage.
Her lab numbers are looking good. We are very pleased with the treatment she is receiving. The facility and staff are first class.

I've been working as much as possible trying to catch up.

Trey, Katka, and Evelyn flew down to Ft. Meyers,Fl. a few days ago and rented a car to visit the Keys. They love the sea and diving. Later tonight they come back to Peachtree City. Sunday afternoon they return to Europe. We will miss them!
