As I write, I am at Deb's bedside where a team of three are conducting a bone marrow procedure in Deb's room. The team members have all worked on Deb before.
Deb had just gotten her breakfast tray and for the first time in many days she was hungry and ready to dig in. As she was about to take her first bite, in marched the team with their equipment.
Deb asked if she could pray for the team before they began. They were all glad to have prayer. Deb prayed so sweetly!
More details afterwards

9:15 am and the procedure is over, except for the residual pain. This was the worst bone marrow procedure Deb has had in spite of being given morphine along with other pain killers. The APN has done over 1,000 procedures and she says some just hurt more for no known reason. She is from Macon, GA.
The bone sample gathering had to redo 3 times to get enough bone.
Deb is now covered in 6 blankets and having teeth-chattering chills. She has to remain in the bed for 2 hours until the painkillers subside.
This was strange because instead of a Fentayl lollypop , Deb was given straight morphine. It might as well have been ice water for all the good it seemed to do.
This procedure was essential so the docs could decide on the next steps.

10:15 am
The doctor just left. Prior to his visit an insurance nurse came in to get me to sign waivers because some of the next procedures may not be covered by insurance.
Then the doc came in and we asked about future possibilities. He is having a Thursday conference with the myeloma team to lay out a plan. Depending on what the bone marrow results are, we may get a 4th stem cell transplant of Deb's frozen cells, or her system could be implanting the previous cells into her bone marrow on a delayed schedule, or we may start some radiation.
Since 06:30am this room has been like Grand Central Station with a continuous flow of caregivers. Deb likes attention, but not this much! ;)

To be 'Fair and Balanced', here's a shot of Deb EATING! She has not eaten a cup of food in a week it seems but today she is hungry! PTL!
She just got her clear bandages changed that cover her sterile port openings in her chest. They also change out the fittings on the end of the tubes. Tuesdays are the day used throughout the hospital.

Platelets -(Normal range 150-500) a whitish colored component of blood. Low platelets=higher Woozy factor!
CRP -(Normal range = 0.0-10) An indicator of relative health. Lower is better. When the number creeps up, Deb could be getting sick.

Hey Vern and Deb
ReplyDeleteI'm not likening the reports, but I am liking your courage. You bless me even as you do battle with this beast.
Love you guys.

Holding you so close to me today in thoughts and prayers. Shanda and I purchased something for Deb at the gift shop at Scottish Rite when we were delivering the HOPE Doves for this year's Threads of HOPE Campaign. When we saw it we both chimed in: "DEB!!" I don't want to mail it, because it's too big to fit in a regular mailbox, and I know you don't need to be trotting off to the P.O. to pick anything up. Saving it for when Deb gets to come home. Just know how much we love you guys and how much you are missed and how often we are lifting you up in prayer. xoxox
ReplyDeleteYou continue to be in my prayers. I'm glad that you were hungry today! Bettina
ReplyDeleteDeb & Vern,
ReplyDeleteI am reminded of Proverbs 4:23
"Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life"
Blessings and Love,
David & Linda
