We were in the cancer clinic at 8:30 am for labs. Deb's platelets were low as was her white blood count and we had a 12:30 appointment with Dr Nair to discuss dismissal and a trip home. In addition, she had to get clearance for a procedure to remove the Arrow Lines in her neck. That requires a minimum 50 platelet count. We were below requirements all around and were convinced that it was unlikely we would be coming home Thursday. Logically, there was no way.
So, off we went for our appointment with the good doctor. He told us to go home but come back shortly for the last stem cell transplant.
We sprang into action. I got Deb back across campus for the platelet IV. I explained our time crunch to the nurses. Deb has to have three pre-meds prior to platelets, so they were ordered. I got her settled down and went back to the Spine Center to meet with the out-processing nurse to get scripts and processes in motion to leave. Then I had to meet with the incoming scheduler for the next round of treatment which for Deb will be the second and hopefully last stem cell transplant. Then dash back to Deb to convince the nurses that we had a very close deadline in order to depart tomorrow.
After Deb completed the platelets, she had to get new labs. We had to be on the other side of the campus in order to get the line removed from her neck. No way! Our nurse could not get the lab results after repeated attempts. Another friendly nurse tried on her PC and was able to get them. With the results in had and after asking the cancer center nurses to please call the line-removal team and ask them to wait on us, we arrived there about ten minutes after closing. They waited on us and Deb was immediately ushered back into a procedure room! We got it all done! PTL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We were exhausted and ate junk for supper so we could begin packing. Deb is still very low in white blood count, so she is still very vulnerable. We will have to limit company for several days when we get home.
With the news yesterday and today being on the Chilean mine rescue, we can identify with their joy at returning home. Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home. We'll be so glad to be there!
